Follow the Mood Ring Right to Your Kitchen

Fun Fact: Did you know Chocolate, strawberries, blueberries, and teas among others foods have been shown to help comfort the human mind? You didn’t? Neither did we! 

Recently studies have revealed the possibility of mood-enhancing effects which are associated with some flavors. Karina Martinez-Mayorga, Ph.D., leader of a research team that has been studying the effects of flavors on mood, has said “Molecules in chocolate, a variety of berries and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids have shown positive effects on mood. In turn, our studies show that some commonly used flavor components are structurally similar to valproic acid.”

Ok enough with the fun facts and research quotes, I bet you want to know which foods can change your mood? I am dying to know which snacks foods I can quickly grab out of my drawer when I want to send a nasty email.

Fruits high in amino acids, including bananas, avocado, blueberries and pineapple, help to release serotonin in the brain which is responsible for elevating mood.  Read more…

Strawberries are thought to stabilize blood sugar and help to reduce irritability brought on by sugar cravings.

Good quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content contains flavanoids, anti-oxidants and theobromine that are thought to work as an anti-depressant.

Oily fish such as sardines, tuna, trout, herring, salmon and mackerel are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that can help to enhance mood and improve memory.

Complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal pasta, potatoes and bread have been associated with relaxation.

So…on the menu tonight will be a Grilled Salmon with a berry chutney served with red-skin mashed potatoes or maybe a butter-garlic pasta. For dessert? Chocolate-covered Strawberries!
